Question I have... Medifast Diet and Hypothyroidism (underactive)? Hoping for any comment. Second question.. I found another and I know there are more of you out there! We are getting ready for school to start.

And I need help talking through the particular issues we face....

- limited restroom breaks.

- endless food during back to school and staff lounge.

- stress!!!.

- sitting with students while they eat.

- skinny, young teachers that can say, "What is slow metabolism?" (LOL).

Come on, folks, I can't be alone. We have some funny stories to share as teachers! Who wants to work together to make this the biggest loser-year of our career?..

I actually do better during the school year due to the structured daily schedule. I just stay out of the lounge on "treat" days..

I just sip the first half of my water during the morning so that my "needs" correspond to the recess, lunch and planning time breaks. I drink my second half of the water closer to dismissal and into the evening..

This is probably more difficult for the elementary school teachers than others. You might want to pre-plan something with a nearby teacher, student teacher, teaching assistant, secretary or whomever to be able to give them a signal and they can watch your class for a few minutes when necessary..

I teach special ed and I was one of the "go to" people for one of our fourth grade teachers who was very pregnant...

I teach 5th grade and can't wait for school to start in another month. I love going to work and it will also be more structured foodwise. The difficult part will be all of the birthday cupcakes and snacks! (and waking up early). It def is stressful but it keeps my mind busy. I'm sure there's more teachers out here on these boards somewhere..

Have a great night!..

Hiya...

I teach high school and started the plan a few weeks before school got out. Lunch with my friends and office treats were a challange, but definitely bearable. The bathroom thing was harder....

I also told a few key people about MF, to others I talked in very general terms about no sugar, no flour etc. It worked well..

Best of luck to all of us~.

I teach 7th-12th grade intense interventions.

My job is extremely stressful at times but having the structure makes my days easier too. I just love being home with my 2 1/2 year old though..

Potty breaks don't seem to be a huge issue for me since I have 2 paraprofessionals in my classroom. I can usually take a time out when needed..

I'm currently in pursuit of my bachelor's degree in early childhood education I have one year of classes & student teaching left before I graduate. This is my SIXTH year in college & ECE is my THIRD major (previously psychology & social work). I, like.

Goldenfishie.

, have been having doubts lately as to whether or not this is what I want to do. Not because I don't like it, but because there are so many other things I'm interested in. Actually, I'm pretty sure if I could afford it, I'd just be a career college student & have five or six majors. Unfortunately, going to school does the exact opposite of paying the bills...

Ok now, don't get mad RETIRED teacher here!.

When I was teaching (5th and 6th grade) I always drank water and had an arrangement with my neighbor that we would just stick our head in the door to let each other know when we had to run down the hall. I even explained to my principal that due to health reasons (we all need lots of water for good health) that I would be doing this and it was all right with him. I also encouraged the kids to drink lots of water so sometimes all 30 of us would be trooping down the hall at odd times! The food at school was another issue and all the going out for lunch is something I really don't miss. I miss the kids but not the hard work. Happy back to school, I'll be the one waving at the school bus!..

Love the responses and you guys made me feel so much better. I had my first school lunch experience today! Principal took us to lunch and was buying the pizza. I said I'd eat a salad and he was all, "Hey, eat pizza". Third time, I was like, "Nooooooooo" in a young child's whiney voice. hahahaha - man, I sat there and picked at my too salty chicken, bitter lettuce salad and drank diet coke. Didn't touch the pizza.

They were all cool, but loved teasing me about the "noooooooooo" and said they would order me salads in the future!.

I love teaching. I love watching my students "get it". I teach 1st grade, so I teach kids to read. It's rewarding and the return to me personally is out of this world. Early childhood peeps, my hats off to you! I am a career early childhood professional, too, having done the child development stuff, mangaging EC programs, even teaching college. I decided a few years ago that if I really had to deal with childish behavior it should actually BE children, so I got my teaching certificate 4 years ago and hit the classroom.

We are seeing more and more basic EC concepts bleed UP into older grades (ie learning centers, small groups, learning styles, high order thinking questions). It has given me a great advantage in the new concepts coming into elementary school grades..

Older grade teachers, there is a special Heaven for you people. I don't understand the language of students past 2nd grade. Kudos to all educators, but dang, can't we get more potty breaks?!?..

Oh my goodness! We have the same problem!.

My first degree is in Sociology. It was my FOURTH major. I actually tried to switch to education in undergrad but it would've taken me a few extra years to grad. My advisor told me to just go ahead and get my soc degree (i was only two semesters away from grad at that point) and come back to get my grad degree..

I do think that being interested in everything is a great characteristic for being an educator though..

I'm not sure how your ed program is structured but I literally don't get classroom time until I student teach. I guess I feel nervous b/c what if I student teach, realize it's not for me, and then what? all those years wasted? I really need to get an internship or something. It's hard b/c I work full-time as well. In addition to that, I just want experience. Teaching jobs in my area are actually pretty hard to come by..

I'm so glad for this thread. I'm subscribing to it now! Hope we can all learn from each other...

Hey y'all! I'm a high school and middle school teacher, and I just LOVE my kids. I'm taking my second year off in a row to stay home with my 8-month-old twins, and only working part-time as a substitute (2-3 days/week). I have to say, I love being able to be with them so much and to go on field trips with my 1st grader, but I miss my big kids! I love the ones who think they're so awesome. I subbed ONE day for a kindergarten class last year, and was practically running out of there at the end of the day!.

Anyway, question. It's hard for us to squeeze in regular lunch! How do you prep and eat all day? We are champs at "holding it," but does starting school really mess with staying OP on scedule?.

Hey all! Glad to see this thread. I teach in the elementary computer lab, and have all K-5 students through the lab twice a week for 30 minutes. It's an insane schedule, but I really enjoy it!.

I'm actually happy to be on Medifast while during school- so far, it seems super conducive to eating in the snatches of time we get during the day... I'm thinking I'll be ordering lots more of the Cappucino for morning snack! And it all packs into my purse and I can steer totally clear of the Teacher's Lounge.... I think I'll buy one of those smaller water coolers and bring that- the building water is icky anyhow. The librarian is my bathroom buddy..

I'm debating about how much I am willing to spend on making my classroom 'mine' this year. Last year was my first year, and I wasn't concerned about lamps, plants, decor so much. This year, I'd like to make it an environment I want to be in. However, since I'm not a classroom teacher, I don't receive PTA money, so I'm on my own for that stuff. I have a list of $150 from Target that I'm pondering. I think I'll make a quick run to Marshall's/Ross and the thrift store today to see how much less I could spend with the same results..

What strategies are you guys using to plan for your year? We start Monday, kids come the following Wednesday...

Julie, I shop online for stuff. My theme is stars. I start with orientaltradingcompany.com. Dollar Tree next. Walmart and fill in with other places. I don't get supply money, either.

It's fun and gives your students an experience of yourpersonality. There are so many fun themes to chose from if one doesn't come to mind to reflect you..

I started Medifast after school was out so I will be figuring it out as I go. I've already told the office not to count me in for meals they buy. I'm stocking up on juices and bars and cheese puffs. Pickles take care of my need for tart and salt, while crystal light snow cones take care of my tart and sweet. Now, I just have to figure out the potty thing!!.

I love to chat with other teachers. Please snap some photos of your rooms as you set up and we can share. Have a great weekend!!..

*Raises hand* Me! Me! OooohOooh! Oooh! Meeee!!.

I'm finishing my teaching degree this semester (even though in the state of Texas there is no longer such a thing for secondary ed). My course of study is technically called a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies with an education focus. I've loved this degree plan because like others, I'm interested in LOTS of different things, and studying all different subjects has been so much fun. The only problem is that when I accidentally took a pre-law class for my political science requirement, I ended up reeeeally wanting to change my major to pre-law. I decided that since I'm 35 I want to finish this degree and quit messing around..

I student teach this semester and graduate in December. I've learned in the past 7+ months on Medifast how to pace my water so I don't have such an urgent need to use the bathroom. After I learn what my schedule will look like, I can adjust when I drink my water, but I suspect I'll be drinking most of it in the evenings..

Goldenfishie, getting no classroom exposure until student teaching can be a little scary. I've had classroom exposure since the very first semester of education courses. I strongly suggest you get on the sub list at your local districts so you can see what you think about the different ages. Subbing is exhausting and not at all like having your own classroom. You walk into that room with rules established by someone else, don't know the kids' names, and are expected to maintain control when all they want to do is rail against the rules while you're there. So don't take THAT part as an indicator of whether you like teaching, but find out whether you like that age of kids.

When I sub Kindergarten, I usually come home with salt residue on my face from sweating all day long, a back ache and totally physically and emotionally exhausted because of all the whining and neediness. I know that I LOVE 5th and 6th graders. I just love that they think they know *everything* but you can still get through to them. I love that their brains are at a point that they can typically understand more abstract concepts and construct their own. I probably wouldn't have known that if I hadn't subbed all grades...

Well, I guess it is a good thing my school is out of space and has no teacher's room!! We have a dinky room with mailboxes, a round table with no chairs, adn a toilet that doesn't flush, but that's about it. Most of us eat on our room or with another teacher who has the same lunch..

I, too, teach HS special ed. I have the ED/BD kids, so I teach Algebra, English, and Life Skills. I love it and cannot picture doing much else. I have an aid some of the time, so it is not a major problem if I have to go to the bathroom; I can always wait a little longer or til lunch. I kind of playa game with water, which I love to drink anyway, but I try to drink X by 2nd period, y by 4th period...I try to go for at least 2 or 3 20 oz. bottles by 3, one on the way to and one on the way home, then whateve else I drink once I get home..

I also find it much easier to keep on track during the year. Maybe it is less free time to mess up. I keep one of those little plug in water heater things if I need to do that and keep tupperware and paper cups for soup and drinks. Sometimes I just do salad for lunch with tuna....I try to get those mini tuna cans with crackers and I keep the crackers in my desk. There's always a kid who is hungry..

I start tomorrow!!!! I already wish it was fall break..

That is such a great suggestion. I'm meeting with one of my advisors tomorrow to see if she has any ideas about what I can do to get some experience. It sucks b/c I also work full-time so my options for internships and other things are kind of limited. They have several programs at my school with classroom opportunities for undergrad students, but not grad. I've had two classes with "required field experience"... for one class, I had to work one night at a children's museum and for the other, I had to go to the mall and restaurants and stuff and observe children and take notes.

What I great idea! Teachers educating themselves about a healthy lifestyle..

Here are some thoughts as I have been at this a while....I started in October, 2009..

1. My students have been my greatest support. I teach seventh grade and they are phenomenal! Once they figure out what you are doing, they get it and do not bring you the cupcakes, brownies, cookies, candy any more without asking first if you can have it. We have a wonderful home economics teacher / class and she would send out samples all the time. Students would just bypass me so as not to tempt me to do something I shouldn't. It really helped because they are excellent cooks under her supervision!.

2. Making adjustments to your planfitting it to your schedule. In October I had late lunch. It was perfect for MF. I drank 1.5 liters of water on the way in to work. At 0700, I ate my oatmeal.

0930-1000 had me with a cup of coffee and a bar. By 1230 I had finished another liter of water. 1300 had me eating lunch (usually a soup or another oatmeal). Usually another restroom break is in order then. Most of the times I can manage to squeeze in a needed break between classes.

My LG happens as soon as I get home from school on those days when I do not have extra curricular. That leaves me two Medifast meals for the evening. Sometimes that will be a shake or a pudding, at others pretzels or a bar..

When our principal switched me to early lunch (1130) at semester, it messed with my schedule and I found it more difficult to eat at appropriate times. My stress level went up and I have struggled a bit to get back in rhythm. My weight has fluctuated a bit over the last 3.5 months, but I am continuing to do my best to get back to where I can complete this journey, and maintain a healthier me..

3. I have taught kindergarten during a summer program. Actually, I have taught K-8 in a summer program (6 summers in a row!) LOL, and still prefer my middle schoolers..

My experiences in the high school were all four gradesand I still love 7th grade best. My majors were social studies and English. I have taught world geography, Texas history, American history, Street Law, journalism, and English/reading grades 6-12. Teaching is the absolute greatest profession in the world! BUT, it is not about the money..

You will be underpaid, underappreciated, and understaffed your entire career. I do it for the kids. It is the only good reason to be there. You have to wade through mountains of paperwork, planning, grading, testingwhat it all comes down to in the end is the feeling you get when they "get it" and apply what they got to their lives. Would I do it for free? I have! Do I like getting paid, sure. Who doesn't? Bottom line is that I cannot imagine myself doing anything else, ever.

This is a great thread. I am glad someone thought of it..

I still have two weeks of "summer" before I officially start, but will probably get in to my classroom this week and begin. Have an OP day, Educators!.

Ciao,..

Hi everyone! I'm so glad someone started this thread. I hope it continues! I am in my 4th week of Medifast and I teach at a year-round special needs school for kids with autism. We did get one week of vacation around the 4th of July and that's when I chose to start the program which was a good choice because the first few days I was very tired and hungry! No way I could've taken on autism those days.

Our school is a 1:1 school, so every student has their own teacher all day we actually have more teachers than kids, if you can imagine that. Getting a bathroom break can be quite a challenge because our kids cannot ever be left for a moment, and some can't ever be off that 1:1 ratio for safety reasons. But there are ways to plan around it and I've set a pretty regular schedule for when I eat my Medifast meals. We have a lot of kids who can be aggressive or destructive so I actually have to plan around that (i.e. can I start eating now or am I about to get called into a restraint?) And of course there's constantly food around, many students have their own supply of snacks or candy that they earn as rewards, and there's birthdays and baby showers, we take the kids out to lunch a lot, etc, but I've managed to just ignore all that. As teachers we're great at planning and organizing and making the most of what we've got...

For the person who asked whether we'd choose this career again if we had the choice yes, a thousand times yes. There is honestly nothing I hate about my job. I don't even care that I work summers or that on any given day I get bitten and scratched, and the other teachers I work with feel the same way, because we get to watch miracles happen. We teach kids to talk... I've watched a 13 year old say her first word. Regardless of the type of education you go into general, early childhood, special, gifted there is always that possibility of awakening something wonderful in a student, and that makes it all worth it.

The mounds of paperwork, planning, stress, dealing with parents, etc, are worth it. That having been said, you need to be in a mindset where you're ready to accept the stress that can come with the job, and you need to make sure you wind up in a good, supportive school..

Looking forward to talking with more teachers as the new school year approaches... nice to know there are others who understand the hectic life of a teacher as well as the challenge of staying on-plan with MF!.

JDS81, you are an inspiration! I feel like a wimp when I call myself a "teacher" because my students are college-level. They're there voluntarily, and if they make trouble I can tell them to go. Under the right circumstances, I can even drop them..

I so admire the people who can handle discipline issues and oh dear the administrative interference that's so much greater at the "lower" levels. I would not have the patience for it. Especially those who love middle school!.

I guess each teacher has his or her own best level, and the joy is when you can find it...

I am a Language Arts 7th grade teacher in a middle school. I absolutely love teaching and can't imagine doing anything else. There is never a dull moment and I get to interact with about 75 unique personalities each day. The down side is that my day does not end when the bell rings at 2:20pm. I usually stay late giving extra help and organizing my classroom for the next day's assignments. At home I have two or three more hours of lesson plans and correcting work.

I have been teaching since 1974 with some half time years when my kids were little. The answer to your question is YES!!!!! I would choose the same career. I love working with the kids and parents. There is nothing more rewarding than making a positive difference for them. I love doing something that I know I am really good at. I love collaborating with other teachers and being a "life long learner" myself.

I love being able to take a problem and helping to solve it. I hate the paperwork and having to jump through hoops because of No Child Left Behind. I hate that teachers are constantly blamed for what is wrong with public education even though we don't have total control. I don't like doing report cards but I love parent/teacher conferences. I don't like the focus on testing and the fact that it is taking away from innovation and professional judgment.

Am I pooped at the end of the day? You bet. Am I able to meet each student's every need every day? Nope. BUT, I love teaching and can't imagine having done anything more rewarding..

What are your fears, likes, dislikes and reservations? Did you teach before you went to grad school. What drew you to ECE?..

I teach 3rd grade Reading/LA. I have to classes for a total of 48 kids. I just started today because I was in my classroom working when my co-teacher pranced in (yes, pranced) showing off her new Medifast body. It was incredible- I had just seen her two months ago!.

I don't have an aide, etc., so we'll see how it goes. Our official first day back is next Tuesday and it starts with breakfast, of course. Yikes. Also, I just thought about the food from the kiddos. All that candy at Halloween! Yikes. Just one day at a time, I guess.....

Oh, what a great post! Between you, Kat, and the others, I'm glad to talk to teachers who love their jobs! Seems like I just hear from the ones who hate everything! (in real life).

I am not currently teaching. I have always loved working with kids, and I've done a lot of volunteer work involving children. I taught children at an english camp in thailand. I wanted to switch my major in college to Education, but I was so close to graduating with a different major that my advisor recommended just graduating and pursuing Education as a grad degree. I did get a "real job" in management and I've been doing that for almost 5 years. I wanted to pay down some bills before I returned to college..

I'm drawn to teaching b/c I love teaching in general. I love helping, training people in my current job, that's just something I enjoy. I chose early childhood because I really love children in early grades. (most of my volunteer work was with younger kids.) I was advised on here though to substitute different grade levels to see what I like best, which I plan to do..

My biggest fears.... Well, part of it is something you mentioned you loved - parents! Ack! The county that I live in does not have a good school district. Most schools are considered low-performing/at-risk and I guess I'm just worried about a lack of parental support and even how to handle it. This is not something we have covered in my classes and I get a feeling that we never will..

I think a lot of it is that I'm just scared to make a career change, even though I HATE my current job, but I've been doing it for a while, so change is scary! But yes, dealing with parents and administrators is sorta what I'm most afraid of. I figure everything else I will pick up or adapt along the way (this lesson plan worked, this one needs to be modified, seating charts, classroom management skills, etc)...

Hello All,.

I'm so glad to find this thread! I'm entering my 20th year of teaching the week after next. It has been an awesome ride and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I still get excited and energized at the beginning of the year and have butterflies the night before the very first day of school. I'm teaching first grade, and have now taught first, second, third, and fifth grades. To all the teachers in training out there, hang in there. You all are teachers just waiting to happen, and it will happen if you don't give up.

Cathy.

P.S. The first challenge for me will be when PTA hosts a breakfast on the first day of staff development. I have a plan, though, and will be drinking my coffee, water, and eating my bar....YOU CAN DO THIS!..

Hi everyone, great to find a teacher group! I am starting my 21st. year in middle school and I absolutely love it. Call me crazy. I teach 7th grade English and Reading. I started Medifast in the spring during our spring break, and am only a few pounds from goal. Seems like the last few are the hardest.

In response to some of your issues, bathroom breaks aren't a problem, after the kids go to their first specials class after homeroom I have planning. That gives me time to get rid of the first coffee and water. Also towards the end of it I work in a meal, since it's been long enough since my breakfast. Like others have mentioned, since the kids change classes every 45 minutes or so it's no problem to have another teacher eyeball my room while I slip down the hall. On the rare occasion I Really need to go during class I send an email to our school secretary to come now!! She is only a few doors down and she arrives quickly, no questions asked..

My colleagues have been so supportive. They have been interested in the program and ask lots of questions about what I can and can't have. No urging me to just try it, or aw you can have just one, can't you. Their compliments as I've lost have been good for the soul I tell you..

If I had to do it again, when selecting my career I'd do it in a heartbeat! Never once have I regretted going into teaching. Didn't do it to get rich, but I can say I love my job. Lots of folks in high pay jobs can't say that. The rewards of teaching aren't monetary, but the knowledge you're making a difference. Love my kids. My daughter also teaches, even after watching mom go through college late (started at age 38), and all the trials and tribulations of teachers.

Teachers start here on Monday; we have a week for planning, meetings, and room setup. Kids start the 23rd. I am ready to go; actually went in last week and did my room. Easier when all your buddies aren't popping in to visit. I will pack my meals, I have been buying the ready made shakes, since I just need to grab a cup of ice from cafeteria and pour it in. I also make the brownies, muffins, and other snacks to have whenever I need.

Will be in transition soon so can have L&G at lunch and supper too eventually..

Sorry I ramble, teachers tend to do that.... Have a super year everyone, and let's keep this group going..

Goldenfishie:.

The parent part can be scary especially at first when you might feel like they don't know if you really know what you are doing. I remember that early in my career. I find that if I don't judge parents and come at it with the attitude that they are doing the best THEY know how to do, it comes across and things are much easier. I also try to remember than some people haven't had good school experiences and that may color what they think about their child's teachers. Just working to get off to a good start: being available, listening, having humor, finding the common ground of wanting what is best for their child and not reacting defensively if things get tense or if a parent is upset....that has worked well for me in my journey as a teacher. I've been around long enough to have experienced the good, the bad and the almost unbelievable and there really is never a dull moment.

It sounds as if your hearts desire is to teach. The scary parts will diminish as you take the plunge and get some experience. That being said, after teaching since 1974, I still have at least one doozy of a back to school dream every August as the new year approaches. Keeps me on my toes!!!..

I have a friend who teaches college students (freshman intro. writing, and some more advanced writing) and am astounded by some of the things he tells me his students do the cheating, the immaturity, he even got a death threat once. Thanks for the kind words Alanna... but like JMac said it clearly takes a special person to handle college students as well! I certainly wouldn't have the patience or confidence. I've always said I couldn't do middle school either, I'd probably be intimidated! I'm 29 and have two (much younger, adopted) sisters in middle school and I can't believe how different middle school is now compared to just 15-16 years ago. I think I *still* wouldn't be cool enough to go to school with them, haha.

I love reading all the posts from people who are so energized and committed to different areas of teaching. Best of luck everyone getting your classrooms ready and welcoming students for a new year!.

I've been wondering about bathroom breaks myself. I'm hoping there won't be too many problems since I'm fairly close to the restroom and kids switch every 1 1/2 hours..

Good luck to everyone!!..

Shout out....

How are your days back, friends? We reported back for contract days today! Already bypassed the bag of candy and kept to my Medifast packets. Bathroom issues looking to be okay if I don't drink too much water at a time..

Loving my room and excited to see it coming together. I'm in the stage of having it all done except for the final stuff that I've pulled out to orgnanize and put away. I love the feeling of it all coming together. 22 on my roll, 6 girls and 16 boys! BIG ratio of boys to girls..

I should be able to burn of a few extra calories being patient with all those boys, right?.

Hope all is going well for everyone else, whether it's getting your class ready or taking classes to be ready for your future classes! Have a great week!..

First day of teacher work week today, went fine. I am down 40 pounds so everyone was feeding my ego, lol. PTO had a nice breakfast buffet for us, but I didn't even go near the tables. I had my coffee and wandered around visiting with everyone. Not one comment about why I wasn't eating. Of course bathroom isn't a prob when no kids, but being diabetic I have always managed the bathroom issue.

Took my Medifast meals and actually found it easier to do when the day is structured..

Room looks great, just working on planning and meetings and such. Looking to be a great year. My 5 classes range from 15-21 kids. Not bad!.

Hope you all had a good op day..

The power went out today (kids thought it was great) and what was one of the first reactions by administration? Order pizza for the whole staff. (That's like 30-40 pizzas, mind you!) It makes sense I guess because none of us could heat up our lunches, and I think it was to help with morale, having to work all day with no power or A/C. It's nice to have admin. do little extra things for us like that. But everyone kept saying "don't worry, at least we get pizza!" Sigh... I just ate my pretzels...

So good luck to everyone avoiding all those unexpected temptations this week... !.

JMac: wow that is a quite a boy/girl ratio! Poor girls hahaha, I hope they manage!.

Barb: great idea using the buffet time to wander/chat/visit... no reason you can't enjoy yourself other ways with all the food around!.

I am going to have to *make* time to take my actual breaks and eat my mid-morning and afternoon snacks..... today it was 10:30a and 4:30p before I had those meals..... a good two hours behind schedule for both of them. I need to realize that all the little fires/emergencies will still be there in 10 minutes after I go eat..

The flip side of that is, even though today was insane and my times were off, I still was perfectly OP as far as intake. Just need to make myself leave my room when my little harp strumming alarm goes off.... lol...

I work in a school, but I'm not a teacher. I'm a lunch lady, have been in "lunch lady land" for twelve years now. I've prepped, cooked, and served in a middle school, college, and now high school..

It is extremely difficult to retrain yourself not to pop a slice of cheese or pepperonis into your mouth while prepping. I have no down time from 7:30 to 2. The lunch ladies get lunch at 2 until we clock out at 2:30. I would be allowed to eat whatever I want, as much as I want at my lunch. I started this program 7 weeks before the end of school and as much as there were some foods I would have loved to eat, I wanted the weight loss more..

I go back this Friday to get the kitchen set back up. On Monday and Tuesday we have to cater lunches for 300 staff members. Then Freshmen come on Wednesday, the rest Thursday. It's food, food, food, all day long. I'm am well immersed OP now and there are no temptations, just regrets that my oatmeal muffins are not nearly as tasty as the fresh baked ones the school serves daily!.

My weight loss was just getting visible by the end of school, wait until they see me now! If only I could make an apron and latex gloves look sexy.....

I am psyched to be back in school this week! I'm lucky to be in a system that really pushes healthy eating and physical exercise for students and staff. I plan, of course, to pack Medifast bars and shakes in my lunchbox, but I know that the cafeteria will have water and a "lean and green" option if I forget. At the start of each year, staff members write down their health goals for the year. We form teams and compete to see who achieves their goals each month. Since everyone is involved, no one minds covering for things like restroom breaks. As far as I know, I am the only Medifast girl in the weight-loss group, but nearly everyone is involved in programs like Nutrisytem or Weight Watchers, so we can still cheer each other on.

I'll make up my missing steps somehow...

I have been going in to set up my room that past couple days and I was so excited that I didn't have to make so many restroom breaks! It is finally settling down! So exciting...since I have a long trek from my portable classroom I think it will be okay not..

Plus, I found out today that my class size is 23 for now. That is so exciting since I had 28 last year! I can't wait to get back to work, but my first "official" day back in not until the 30th..

Have a great rest of the week for all of you back at work (and those that aren't)! Keep dodging those temptations...

Good morning from England!.

This thread has taken off since I was last at the site! It's a wonderful thing to see all of the support here for the education system..

Meridith? I would have to say that you are an integral part of the school systemas is that school secretary that covers so others may go to the loo! LOL.

Teachers for DoDEA do not start until next Wednesday, with students starting on the 30th. I have been doing a bit of this and that this week by sponsoring a new teacher to our school. That entails taking her around to various offices to inprocess, helping her find a car, house, childcare, etc. We have had major appointments that has made my Medifast journey a challenge. I will be glad when we are back to school and an even keel next week so my journey will not be so bumpy..

Someone mentioned hour plus classes? Restroom breaks are still pretty manageable. You get to know your body well on the program. I usually anticipate goinggo before I really have to go in the times between classes or before school starts so that I do not have as many times during class when I HAVE to go..

My DM always told me to take advantage and try to go when I could (growing up, not just as an adult)it works for me! LOL.

I am the social committee chairperson. sigh. We are scheduled to put on the breakfast for our first day back. Pancakes anyone? (I intend to bring my Medifast pancakes that day as well).

There will be a potluck lunch on Thursday, and a PTO sponsored breakfast on Friday. More food to avoid. And student helpers to feed as my club members will be around helping out over those three days. Ooooooo boy..

I am so ready for school to start thoughand I don't know for sure what I will be teaching or who I will be teaching with! LOL I will have a student teacher again (my third)does that count as being a college teacher?.

Anyway, I hope to check in here morewhat an awesome group!..

I just retired in June...and I am still experiemcing the "Back to School" emotions. Would I choose teaching again...in light of this economy and how thimgs are going for my colleagues right now in terms of contract negotiations and daily demands from every outside source you can think of, the answer is definitely not. My son made noises about becoming an education major and I said absolutely no way would I help to pay for a degree in education. For most of my career I loved it...still hear from lots of former students who are all grown up now...priceless. BUT the last few years were stressful to the max...demands from the state, administration, and parents were out of line and interfered with what I loved to do and that was teach children. Maybe things will become "normal" again and then I would say that teaching is a great thing. Right now the answer from me is an emphatic "NO."..

Hello fellow educators. I've enjoyed reading through this thread and seeing comments from newbies to retired teachers. I like the beginning of the year because it's a fresh start each year. This year I'm also restarting MF, so it's a fresh start for my diet too. I'll be honest, between travel and eating out and a knee injury, this was a bad summer for my waistline! I agree with those of you who say that it's easier to stay OP during the year because of the routine. My worst part of the day is when I get home after school.

To those of you starting off in education, congratulations! You've picked a wonderfully rewarding profession. I can't tell you how many friends and relatives wish they had become teachers and are longing to do something as rewarding. That said, there will be rough spots, but it's your colleagues who will get you through. I've taught middle school for the last 20 years. My husband teaches at the same middle school as I do. And I hope my kids become teachersIt definitely runs in the blood.

I majored in elementary ed., taught 2 years and thought I had picked the wrong profession. I had never even considered middle school, but as soon as I moved up in grade levels, I knew I was where I was supposed to be..

I also am not looking forward to having to fit bathroom breaks to the bell schedule. At our school the faculty restrooms always seem to be occupied when you need them. When I first started out teaching, I was in a 2nd grade classroom with it's own bathroom, you know the kind where the toilets are 3 inches from the floor. I would never have dreamed of using it. The short toilets are one thing , but those little guys are not very good with the aim. One day, in an absolute emergency, I used it while the kids were in the classroom.

I just said, "Yep, teachers have to go to the bathroom too." That was the quietest afternoon all year..

Good luck to you all!..

Good morning everyone! Is the sun shining brighter because I hit goal the other day? I think so. Went to Staples' Teacher Appreciation Day this morning. Just got a phone call, I won a whole case of copy paper from the drawing! Teachers on tight budgets will surely appreciate that one..

Teacher prep week is done, kids start Monday. Yes, I am ready, anxious to meet the new critters and get going. I start every year with a really positive attitude, and for me it carries through all year. Well, except for 2 years when the group of 7th. graders we had were the class from heck. You get a group like that every 4 or 5 years..

This is year 21 for me and I still don't sleep well the night before..

Budget cutting meant we had to take our mini-refrigerators out of our rooms, but I bought several of those gel ice packs, and one of those in my lunch bag works fine. I use the premade shakes, I can pour one over ice (that's still available free in the cafeteria). They don't have to be refrig. I plan to start transition maybe next weekend, but there are some Medifast things I will still use for now, the shakes, oatmeals, cocoa, and brownies. Even the soft serve is nice for evening snacks..

Friday we had a covered dish lunch for faculty. I had hit goal and wanted to celebrate. I fixed a plate with small spoonfuls of a number of things. Stayed away from anything with pasta in it, or potatoes. The KFC drumstick which I pulled skin off of was dry and salty. What I enjoyed most was a ramen noodle salad (ok pasta I guess) and some of the greens walnuts and strawberry salad.

Ummm, could it be my tastes have changed and I am going to pick healthier foods by habit? Woo Hoo!..

Hi everyone. teacher here - and yes the stress can be unbearable. let me put it this way, I lost weight on Medifast in 2007 had an extremely stressful term/year in 2009/2010 and gained all the weight back that I lost previously. so here I am back on Medifast and the school year is about to start up again. my only hope is that I can stick to this plan and not let the stress get to me. it's real difficult especially with lunch at 10:35 am and no break til 3:18 pm.

If we want it badly enough I guess it will be done. so, have a great new school year and let's get skinny!..

Water, water, water!.

I teach in Arizona, where the daytime average temp has been 108 and will remain so until October!!!.

I teach kinder and our school really pushes water, so getting the water in is very easy..

Keeping that same water in - - - challenging!.

I finally opted for Poise Pads. Yes. While I can run to the bathroom with just a bit of preplanning (I have an assistant) our teacher bathrooms are through the LOUNGE (home of the deathly brownies and chips) and far away. I was "leaking" in the middle of the courtyard..

So, it is Poise Pads for me on school days. They are my secret weapon!.

Take care,.

I teach 4th grade, and I have a "bathroom buddy" teacher. I notify her when I have to step out to use the restroom. A lot of the time I just run quickly and use it when the kids are engaged in work. They don't even know I'm gone. After teaching 19 years, you learn to use the restroom quickly. Of course I tell my bathroom buddy, but I'm usually back before a minute is even up...

Hello everyone. Our kids started yesterday, and so far it seems to be a pretty good group. 5 classes of 7th. graders for English and reading. I too find it easier to stay op while at work. I fix a couple brownies or muffins the night before, then pack those and a couple of the ready to drink choc shakes.

I just started transition, and once I get to the 2 L&G meals a day one will be a nice salad with a small can of tuna tossed in. I am going to get lazy for the next part and cut and paste what I posted on my other group, don't usually do that, but it's a longer one and I am tired....

Good evening everyone, and thank you all for the kind words. I am really feeling great these days. Ok, all you newbies, stick with this, you can do it! There were lots of weeks when I lost nothing or maybe just a pound. Then next week or so it will catch up and you will have a good loss. You body can't read a calendar. I am slowly starting the transition, just adding the extra veggie helping now.

It was a small salad, so also had a 1/2 cup of canned corn. OMG, you'd have thought it was some decadent choc dessert. I was reading the labels, I always used to buy GG niblets. There is a big calorie diff between delmonte canned corn and the GG. Bought DM and it was great.

Heaven..

School started Monday, and so far it seems like I have a pretty good group of kids. I love my job, lol..

Going to go watch a baseball game, and will probably fall asleep in the chair. Oh, I got a new bag of coffee beans today, flavor is "Death By Chocolate" Really good, and house smells heavenly...

Can't even describe the day...just sayin! 16 boys in a class of 24 exceeded even MY expectations! All I can say is "DAYUM". Wow..

I had no problems with bathroom. Given the heat and busy-ness of the day, I sweated any fluid I managed to get in. I'm gonna have to stick with the drink packets and make an effort to get those packets in. I was starving by the end of the day, which is a first for me since starting this program! After all the kids were gone, I went to the water fountain and probably drank 2-3 cups of water, stood up and belched. hahahahahaha - it was funny!.

If today was any indication, I should be able to get this weight off very quickly. I have never hustled the way I did today! Gotta go drink some more water and eat some dinner..

Hey Educators! Tomorrow is my first day back to school, but monday and wed will be my shorter days with only one evening class. It is a class I haven't taught in a few years though so we shall see how that goes. I am curious if I will find it easier to do medifast during the school year or the summer. I worry about the stress. I am a total stress eater. I am going to overcome that though, I have done so good this summer staying op 100%, It WILL carry over to the school year.

I am so use to eating whenever I get up and 3 hours after, etc, it will be strange to have to arrange it with the class schedules. I teach college, so it is a bit different, schedule wise but hopefully it will work out okay. Good luck to the others who begin tomorrow!..

Well, tomorrow will be my first day back. I am excited for the new year and I can't wait to meet my new kiddos! We have professional development and meetings all week. I know I can stay on plan! Just have to dodge all the welcome back goodies and m&m jar in the office!.

We also have a staff BBQ on Thursday. Not sure what I am bringing yet, but I am going prepared so I can stay on plan...

Marilees, I can now get past the coffee stand on the quad without buying the muffin I used to tell myself I "needed for energy." I make sure I have a bar (preferably with some chocolate) waiting in my office...

Computer glitches have me running ragged...but will persevere..

Day one is complete. I am going to be challenged by a few individuals, I can see already. Ah well.....this is a challenge I shall meet and overcome..

Thought about stress eating today. Did not succumb all day long..

Yeah! One Medifast meal to godid eat a handful of peanuts as I was out of dill pickles..

Will have to work harder at remaining OP through the evening hours tomorrow..

How about Open House, folks? Anyone else facing the meet and greet in the first week of school? Thursday promises to be a VERY long day......

We just started our second week of school, and I am feeling great! Got a new shipment of the ready to go choc shakes, brownies, and cocoa mixes today. Yes, there's a pattern there; I love chocolate! Both are important to my daily meals at school. Started second week of transition, and celebrated yesterday by going to Wegmans and buying FRUIT!!! Tossed a small banana into the blender with an orange creme shake yesterday. Today I had a small salad and a serving of delicious red raspberries for lunch. I sooo missed fruit. Down to 4+1 with extra serving of any veggie, and of course the fruit.

My students (7th graders) are so good this year I am waiting for the shoe to drop. We got the new year off to a great start..

Good luck to all!..

Hi, everyone! My name is Sandy, and I am a 5th grade science teacher. I have almost 75 students this year, and I really love what I do..

I am rejoining Medifast after a 3 year hiatus. In a nutshell, I lost 48 lbs on Medifast in 2007, got married, got pregnant right away, developed gestational diabetes with my son, had my son (a beautiful and healthy baby!), and gained over 40 lbs AFTER I gave birth! I am now newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic and have just ordered the Medifast program to start my weight loss journey once again. If there is one thing I know, it's that Medifast works!.

As for school, I have no trouble with RR breaks, we have adjoining doors, so I just open it and run to the RR, which is right outside my door. Plus, you do build up a tolerance to the water consumption. My principal is very understanding, as long as the teacher next door can peek in..

I am really excited to start Medifast again (waiting for order to arrive). And I am happy I found a teachers forum. I hope to post lots!..

ESL endorsement, anyone?.

I decided I'm going to get mine. I had a class last semester where we had a professor come in and discuss different ESL techniques and they fascinated me! Plus, I love traveling and learning about other cultures, I'm very open-minded about not everyone doing things "the American way," and my father immigrated to the US so it seems like a way to kind of give back..

Do you guys have any ESL children in your class? How do you handle it?..

Yes, I am ESL certified. Just got the certification in April. I have ESL kiddos this year. Honestly, I don't do that much different. I am a huge child development person and that offers many of the same strategies for all students as needed for the ESL ones. Lots of print, lots of language - reading, writing, listening, speaking.

I love working with younger students. Go for it!!..

I may have to come and tap ya'lls expertise on this. I have a new student who is very ESL and I want to help him be successful. He still answers in monosyllables (2nd year in program) and I am concerned about his progress...

Alright folks, question for you: What do you do to relieve stress? Are you an emotional eater like I am that reaches for food when things go wrong and/or right? I am trying to find a better alternative for life in the classroom and out. Think about it. What do you do when you get something dumped on you by adminstration and know that you have to do it, but aren't sure how to get started? You want to do a good job. It's not just your students watching, also your peers, parents, and the rest of the community?..

I just found your thread. I am in my 2nd year teaching high school geometry, trigonometry, and an International Baccalaureate Diploma class called Information Technology in a Global Society. Prior to that, I taught 3rd grade at an IB elementary school for 5 years..

Teaching is my 2nd career. My degree is Applied Mathematics and Computer Engineering. I worked in the corporate world doing tech support and training for many years then both my DH and I quit our jobs to launch our own technology company. I took a leave from that when my daughter was born and was a stay at home mom. My DH kept with our company. When my daughter started kindergarten, I volunteered in her classroom and discovered how inspiring it was to teach kids.

IB caught my attention and I never looked back..

Our school started back Aug. 24. I went on plan Sep. 12. This is my 2nd go round on Medifast Last time I found the structure of my day very convenient for meal planning with the elementary school schedule. I am still figuring it out now in high school because I teach block schedule so every class is about 90 minutes long. It is definitely more challenging schedule wise now...

Former teacher here. I taught FACS in a middle school, 8th Grade LA/SS and Drama, and 1st Grade in my three years of teaching. I moved to another state and was a bit burnt out from what was really 3 first years because of how different each year was and the challenging schools that I was teaching in (extreme transient population with high poverty along with some really bad administrators) and I was scared to learn a new state's system..

I switched to something completely different for a year, and then moved into corporate training for a few years. I wasn't happy at that company and found a job that I loved as a training specialist for a software company that produces a student information system, so all that school experience was perfect for going in and training school districts on using our system. I traveled all over the continental US, but eventually got tired of being on the road that much. I moved into being a Knowledge Management Analyst for our company, and recently moved into being an online community manager for our website which is something that I'm absolutely loving and consider to be my dream job..

So don't fear that your education might be wasted if you try teaching and don't find that it's what you hoped it would be. I commend anyone who's a teacher. It's an amazing, frustrating, wonderful job, that has many rewards. I loved my time with kids, because they are what makes teaching completely worth doing. But if you're worried that your degree might be wasted if you don't stay with teaching, don't. Mine was a great foot in the door to a whole new career...

Any teachers coming up for air yet? M<y schedule is still crazy and our first conference night is Thursday, but I am starting to get into a routine of sorts. Got a surprise observation today from an AP. They pop in once a month to visit every teacher where I work. I was NERVOUS!!!..
