The Percentage Posse's Holiday Challenge starts on Monday, November 16th - and EVERYONE is welcome! We don't care if you're on another team, or in another challenge - this challenge stands alone and doesn't interfere with any other activity..

1. Post your beginning weight and your goal weight to this thread on Monday, November 16th. This will allow our stellar statistician, Cteetoo, to make cool graphs and charts to motivate us!.

2. Wednesday, November 18th is THE LAST DAY to sign up for this challenge! The cut off time is midnight, Pacific Standard time. Use your weight from Monday, November 16th..

3. The Challenge will run until January 4, 2010..

4. Everyone will weigh in weekly on Monday and post their current weight and pounds lost since the week before..

5. And of course everyone posts whenever else they'd like to post also to help get people through the holidays! Challengers are encouraged to post tips, personal experiences, and just plain old chat!.

6. Cteetoo is our official statistician and the final word on standings, who reported what, and when. She does her fantastic charting, recording and stats for us every week and let's us know our rankings..

7. On January 4th whoever has lost the highest percentage of their original weight as reported on November 16th is the winner, the second highest the second place winner etc..

8. This is the thread we'll be using for the duration of the Challenge, so subscribe to it so you can always find us. To subscribe, click on Thread Tools in the menu bar at the top right of this page, and select subscribe - you'll receive emails when the thread is updated, and your updates will have a link to the thread..

I want to add we're also asking that on a volunteer basis people donate a set amount per pound or per percentage point to a food bank based on the amount of weight they loss! Welcome aboard - I'm in (even though I had better be at goal by NEXT MONDAY LOL) - I need to stay accountable for the holidays and if I lose 3# I'll probably be the highest percentage winner :-)..

Wow Steph! You two are fabulous in your generosity along with your daily tips. And I cannot thank you enough for those tips and just getting the first challenge going. It has really kept me motivated on days I am tempted to let up some. Even if I don't incorporate all of your tips at the time, they stick in my head and I come back to them when I need them..

Also, would like to reiterate (as Paul noted) Will's suggestion (now rule?) that everyone agree to make a donation for the percentage they lose to a food bank or charity in their area. Perhaps we should ask folks to make that designation up front and incorporate it in the stats so it is not forgotten? Also, given that all of the charities will be short before Christmas, perhaps we could ask folks to make their donations at two times, one the week of December 14 after weigh in which will have us halfway through the challenge, and the second the week of January 4? Mine will be the Tarrant County Food Bank which I know is desperately trying to keep up with demand given our current economic times...

OK - WOW just getting caught up on all the posts. How exciting. Some general comments..

Diane - giving half the money or food to the food banks mid-December and again at the end of the challenge is a great idea..

Not sure everyone wants to post their contributions or keep it a personal matter - up to the individual I think - if people do share maybe Ctee can incorporate it into the chart somehow to see how much money we've raised..

Regarding tickers. I think you have to update it from Community Page then take the new code generated at the end and paste it into the signature file here..

Casandra - you have to take the code that Stephanie listed and put the follow five characters before it and paste that into your signature for the discussion boards (top left choose Edit Profile/Settings than choose Edit Signature from the resulting list of items). Please give it another try..

Welcome aboard everyone - and as I said this is really exciting AND it's going to be FUN!!..

Steph and I typically post a tip of the day and others should join in and post them when they come up with them. Starting today I will post this here as well as in the old 15# Challenge Thread. So, here's today's tip:.

Get This Magazine.

Right now on the newstand is a one time special edition magazine from Oxygen called Get Off The Couch. It's targeted at women but there's no reason guys can't benefit from it too, I know I am. On the cover is a woman who has lost 339 pounds (489 to 150) and even has managed to come away with a firm stomach! Very motivating. She started out with aerobics (walking around the block!) and graduated to strength training/weight lifting..

The magazine appears to promote some suggestions you can't employ while on Medifast but can on T&M and it overall gives good advice on cutting down, avoiding temptations, exercising and so on. They appear to promote the "Clean Eating" approach to weight loss..

Check it out...

Since I'm in transition, I don't expect to lose a lot more during the challenge, and I don't want to wait until after the holidays since so many people need help now. So I made my donation of a hundred dollars to the Midwest Food Bank today. I only lost 70 pounds, but what the heck, nothing wrong with rounding up!.

Doing what we can for others is a blessing to both them and us. It helps individuals, but it also makes our communities stronger. We're not obligated to help others - it's a privilege to be able to help. It's a privilege to have the wherewithal to assist others. For me, I can't bear the thought of families without enough food while I sit down to eat a feast at the holidays, or even just buy my shipment of Medifast. It's true, I can't save the world - but I can buy somebody a holiday turkey...

Good morning, Challengers!.

I wanted to point out that we keep talking about weight loss challenges, but there are also members of this team who are in transition and will be in maintenance! All are welcome. While the prizes are all about the weight loss goals, we T&Mers will have stated goals too, and will be reporting out to the team and will be accountable to you all for how well we do. My own goal, for example, will be to get under 140 and to maintain there throughout the holidays..

So if you're in T&M, you're welcome here too! We want a good cross section on this team, and we need each other for support and inspiration. So come on! We're going to January On Plan!..

answered May 02 at 01:25

Lorenzo's gravatar image

Yup I'll be at goal soon (ANY DAY NOW HINT HINT SCALE!) and will be coming up with specific goals for my T&M too. I want to have at least a 5 pound cushion and then maintain that over the holidays and for the rest of my life. I have a specific way to handle T&M that I have been mulling over in my head but it's to soon to type it out yet..

But I agree with Steph - the prizes are for the biggest losers and they will be the winners based on percentages of weight loss (thank you Ctee for keeping score!) but maintainers and transitioners are more than welcome and if we lose a few pounds and/or keep the weight off during the holidays we're all winners!..

Good morning everyone I am down to 148.2# this morning .2# away from my goal weight. I thought for sure today would be THE day but it wasn't. Definitely by Saturday now though, right?.

Here's today's tip, it's more reading a book called:.

The Thin Commandments: The Ten No-Fail Strategies for Permanent Weight Loss by Stephen Gullo.

This is a great book that can be used with any weight loss plan. You can snag it at Amazon in a hard cover bargain version for $10 and probably get it at most libraries. There's also a Kindle version (and probably other eBook versions) as well as an Audible audio download version of it. You can preview the book at Amazon too..

Check it out. Meanwhile I want to add that it's Veterans Day here in the US today and I hope that those of you that have the day off are enjoying it (think OP foods and exercise!) and whether you have the day off or have to work I hope you are remembering our veterans as you go about your day...

Thanks for leading me into my Tip of the Day:.

You can only fail if you quit.

This weight loss thing truly is a journey, and most of us have to attempt the journey more than once to get it done. Every time we make the attempt, we learn more about ourselves, what works, what doesn't, what our triggers are, etc... We seem to require some critical mass of knowledge about ourselves before we can lose the weight and keep it off..

So you may not "succeed" in the sense that you get it all right today - but as long as you take what you learn today and use it on your journey tomorrow, it's not a failure. It's just another lesson learned. A delay, perhaps, a bump in the road - but not a failure...

In terms of challenging the T&M folks, there's keeping the weight off, continuing to fit into our new slimmer clothes and of course giving money to the food bank that we're doing to help others. That should be enough I think...

Welcome to all the new people that have just signed up! It's great to see both familiar and new faces..

Here's my tip for today - it's an oldie but a goodie but I still use it all the time. It sounds trite but really it works..

If you are tempted to go off plan get busy.

If you are hungry and it's time for a Medifast meal or your L&G meal than have it. However if you just ate or feel it's really too soon to eat OR if you are just being tempted by some food that happens to be around you that looks good but isn't on plan then get busy! Go for a walk, call a friend relative (do both - get on your cell phone call your friend/relative and walk while you talk!), take a shower or a bath, exercise, read a book (or a magazine if it doesn't have those tempting food pictures in it), play with your hobby (model cars, scarpbooking, PC games, whatever)..

Before you know it you will be over the hunger or temptation!..

Good advice Debbie! It's been part of my basic philosophy for quite some time now. So think about success and your goal - think about what you DO want not what you DON'T want. It's like the old joke where they say "Don't think about an elephant" and of course you do..

This is too funny, Debbie. I was just about to post that slogan as soon as I got to the end of the thread, and two posts down was yours! That is so right - it is a MENTAL game. I cringe when I read people say they don't know if they can do it. We need to say YES WE CAN DO IT, whether we feel like we can or not. Then the actions will follow..

Carry on!.

answered May 03 at 00:22

I'm always mystified when people say they don't know if they can. Don't know if they can - what? You only have to do one thing, and you only have to do it one time. You have to say NO to whatever off plan food is in front of your face right this second. We do it every day. We don't eat every M&M in the house. We don't keep eating until we die.

We already know how to do it, and we already know we CAN do it..

People let themselves get all wrapped up in the "oh, does that mean I can never have pizza again?" Sheesh, if I had to do ANYTHING forever, there's just no way. But I can do without it for lunch, today. That's the only choice I have to make - the one that's right in front of my face, right this second. All the rest are mythical choices that might never happen. Worry about those choices when they get here..

If I look at the chocolate and think "I can never have this again", I'm putting way too much pressure on myself. Never? None? Forever? How can I do that? I can't do that! That's stupid. I'll never last..

But if I look at the chocolate and think "I'm not eating that now", heck, I know how to do that. I do it all the time. It's real, and it's manageable, and it's just this once, and I can do it. Now is all that matters. Tomorrow can take care of itself...

I suspect that the link might work for you if you're already logged into the site. Depending on how you get to my blog, you don't have to actually be logged in to see it...

Good Morning! I'm awake early, can't sleep so here's today's tip, it's behavioral:.

Mindful Eating.

Be aware that you are eating. Medifast recommends trying to take at least 20 minutes to eat a meal. Taking 20 minutes to eat a lean and green meal is fairly easy, but a shake not so easy. Whether you take 20 minutes or 10 make sure to eat (or sip) slowly and be aware of your food. It really does take 20 minutes or so for the body to realize that you've eaten and turn off the hunger signals. So if you've taken less than 10 minutes have some water or practice yesterday's tip and go and get busy!.

When you are home try to eat in the same place every day. Somewhere solitary. Not.

In front of the TV or computer. Making eating a solitary activity. If you work in an office when you are at work try to go to a break room, a conference room or some other special place to have your meals rather than your desk where you will be interrupted by people, tempted to answer the phone or call someone on it, use the computer or work..

Have a great day...

Also from Your Page (MyPage Tab at the top) if you go there to the right is an area that says "My Board Posts" - if you click on that it will show your posts to the boards. From there pick one of your messages that you left in this thread and that will bring you here...

So I'm .2# under my goal of 148#, weighing in at 147.8# this morning at 5:15 a.m. (that's another whole story about why I am up so early - I'll be blogging about that later over the next few days)..

Today I just want to say THANK YOU to ALL OF YOU that have played AND WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY (so long as you're still here - I WILL BE HERE) a significant role in my success!.

I look forward to joining my friends here that are maintaining and I look forward to helping those of you still on your way to goal to get there!.

I'm sure I'll have lots to say in my blog during the coming week about hitting goal and transition and some decisions I am making now that I have hit goal. BUT FOR TODAY I INVITE YOU TO STOP BY MY BLOG and HELP ME DO A HAPPY DANCE TO A GOLDEN OLDIE FROM DISCO DAYS PAST - WHICH I AM GOING TO POST IN A FEW MINUTES..

My tip of the day:.

I'd say that the most important habit I've acquired during 5&1 was planning ahead. When going to a restaurant, I check the nutrition information on line and pick my order out in advance. I plan my meals in advance and prepare in advance when I can. I always have Medifast meals with me, and keep them stashed in my office and car..

Planning ahead means that I always have options. I always have a Go To plan. I don't HAVE to cheat because I've left myself no choices. When I eat often enough, and have good options, that helps keep the cravings at a minimum. and, when I've planned and I follow the plan FIRST, before cheating, I'm generally just not tempted..

Plan ahead. Be prepared. You don't have to stress out over it, or obsess, but it IS your life and your health - it rates a little thought and planning...

Has anyone read or heard of a book called The End of Over Eating? By Dr David Kessler. He used to be the head of the FDA during the Clinton and Bush era and he is the one who took on the tobacco industry. This book is a revelation as it documents the scientific evidence of how hyper palatable foods effect our brain chemistry. Quite astonishing really. I watched severel interviews with Dr Kessler last night on the computer. He kind of views the food industry and the obesigenic food culture as his next target and he strives to change attitudes and provide information to people so they can take control of their own food behavior in an informed way..

I have gotten this book on CD from the library and I listen to it on my 90 minute commute each day. I am about half way through the book. Dr Kessler struggles with food and over eating himself so he has included personal experience as well as scientific data. He can relate!.

Good stuff..

Happy OP Friday!.

I swear I have tried to enter the banner at least 5 times. I did it exactly as everyone said. I got some weird message and then I think it said no photo available! I am so sad because I really want it!..

Well, I am glad it was not only me that was stuck with the banner. I consider myself pretty computer savvy, but it just is not working for me! One of those moments where I wish I married that dorky guy from my computer class. He is quite wealthy now (developed some kind of software for the puter) at least I would have my banner!..

Thanks, Steph. Apparently it is still not going to work for me or for my friend. I get a notification in my email, but when I click on it, my computer "can't find" it. That's a shame. I will make the effort to find the thread each day, but I don't know how to explain to my friend how to do it since she does not have time to come on these boards. (I read and annotate the blogs and send her links to several each day.) Sometimes when I go to the "Community" page, there will be an entry for this thread, so that makes it easy.

Thanks, Paul. That will help me. Now if I can get my friend to the site for the first registration, then it will help her from there on. The email notification feature seems to be faulty..

My tip for the day:.

At first it may seem difficult, but as you start seeing your weight go down, your body will WANT to get moving. I can be sitting at the computer or reading or something and have to get out and go for a walk right then in the middle of something else. Wierd, huh?.

Congrats Paul! Thanks to you and Corbie for the tips! I read a book recently called Eating Mindfully - it's all Zen and everything - but still applies to actually slowing down and experienceing every bite of our food instead of just rushing so fast that we don't have time to enjoy it or we don't even realize how much we have eaten. Also - having a plan is key, as Corbie says. I just found out our department Christmas lunch will be Dec. 10th at The Cheesecake Factory. I went to see the nutrition information on their menu and it is really staggering! Even if you are not doing Medifast - it is good to take the time to see what you are actually consuming. In the past - I would just go to restaurants and order what I wanted without really considering all the Calories, Fat., etc.

Hope everyone has a great day!.

I tried several times to load the banner and was unable to do so. I saw where a couple of other people were having issues too. Is it really "Operator Error" or do we need another link? One time I got the message that this image has been deleted or moved. No biggie - but if possible - I would like to add the banner too...

'k, try this. Start your browser manually (just click on the IE icon, or whatever browser you're using). Go to the MyMedifast page and log on. Then, switch back to your email and click the link. See if that helps...

Thanks for starting us up, Steph!! I want to add just a couple clarifications on how the weigh-ins will work.....

Weighing in.

Post your weight, not your change in weight. For example, you would post "I weighed in at 199." Not "I lost 2 pounds this week." You CAN post "I weighed in at 199 this week, for a total of 2 pounds lost this week." It is imperative you post your ACTUAL weight or I will not be able to count it..

I will not be using your ticker, so you must post your weight in order for it to count..

Weigh-in days are Mondays, but to be accommodating, you may post your weight anytime Sunday or Monday of the challenge week. Weights posted after midnight Monday (EST) will count for the following week..

Not weighing in.

If you don't weigh in a particular week, I will just carry over the weight from your previous week's weigh in.

If you did not weigh in the previous week, you will not be eligible for recognition in the weekly leaderboard standings.

If you don't weigh in for 3 weeks in a row, I will drop your stats from the challenge. If you are going to be away for a while or need an exception for this, please PM me...I'm just trying to keep things simple!.

If you have ANY questions about the above, please don't hesitate to ask! I learned a lot over the last 6 weeks of the 15 pound challenge, and can't wait to bring fabulous charts & stats for your viewing pleasure in our NEW challenge!..
